Lutein
Lutein is a powerful antioxidant that protects humans from harmful effects of free radicals. The research performed by scientists at Harvard University shows that, after lutein is absorpted into the blood, it begins to accumulate in the retina and lens of the eye. It slows the formation of degenerative changes in the retina (macular degeneration), cataracta, the risk of heart disease. It adjusts the level of good cholesterol and also protects against colon cancer.

It can be found either in free form or in compounds (ester). For the absorption of free lutein in human body, there is no no need for enzymes. Lutein can be found mainly in broccoli, egg yolk, carrots, corn, lettuce and tomato.
